Bose Computer Speakers

bose computer speakersIn 1994, Bose Computer speakers were developed - called the 'MediaMate'. They were specifically designed for computers and were marketed as an enhancement to the computer’s built in audio. Highly affordable, they retailed at just $99.

The Bose computer speakers could be put anywhere near the computer because they had magnetic shields build in which stopped interference from the monitor. The speakers themselves took up a minimum of desk space and allowed the user to switch to another source such as an MP3 player at the same time. The MediaMate speakers were highly successful and it wasn’t until 2004 that these speakers were superseded by the Bose Companion 3, series 1 speakers. The Companion 3 delivered a wider range of notes in the sound that allowed for better clarity at higher volume. The speakers were also smaller than their predecessors, and could be attached to the monitor itself. The Companion 3 was however more expensive, retailing on release at $199 and then 5 months later increasing to $249.

Very quickly in 2005, Bose released the Companion 2, series 1. Similar to the MediaMates, the Companion 2 had electromagnetic shielding and 2 connection ports for switching from one device to another however, you could not control the volume on each device separately.

The following year, Bose brought out the Companion 2, series 2 speakers. This used TrueSpace Stereo technology to enhance the sound clarity and took into consideration that essentially the speakers were for use by someone sitting in front of a computer rather than the system being used to fill a large room with sound.

In the same year, Bose brought an updated version of the Companion 3 and the Companion 5. The new Companion 3 essentially was just an update in looks and performance. The Companion 5 system used Bose’s latest technology – TrueSpace Surround. This technology required a USB port. When you connected the USB to the computer, the device was added to the sound management area of your control panel. The sound enhancement was much greater than on previous models, allowing the user to hear small details previously unheard. They retailed for $399.

The latest model of Bose computer speakers on the market is the Computer MusicMonitor. These speakers are considerably smaller than previous models.

Essentially the technology involves dual opposing passive radiators, rather than one large radiator, which cancel out each other’s vibrations providing concert hall comparable sound!
