Bose Speakers

Bose SpeakersAs a company they have for 40 years been making Bose Speakers and have won a reputation for innovative stereo systems of superb quality with a passion for research of new technologies and the development of future products. Bose speakers are among the best on the market and they are highly popular because they are simple to set up and operate, are compact and yet give brilliant sound quality.

The company was founded in 1964 by Dr Amar Bose who was a professor of electrical engineering at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Dr Bose studied at MIT in the 50’s. One day, he decided to buy himself a new stereo but was disappointed to find that the speakers on the system did not produce such great quality despite the high technical specifications. Dr Bose then proceeded to conduct extensive research in speaker design and phychoacoustics (the perception of sound by human beings). He ultimately wanted to replicate the sound and emotional impact of live music in the home! Over the subsequent years he developed significant new designs which led to the development of Bose as a company. He had huge success with his first speaker system. An unconventional design for the time, the 901 Direct/Reflecting speaker system used the walls and ceiling around it to distribute sound all over the room similar to a live performance. These speakers ensured the rapid growth of the company through the 1970’s. Since then, Bose has gone from success to success with major new award-winning technologies continuing to emerge to worldwide acclaim and popular demand. One of these technologies is the Auditoner audio demonstrator which allows architects to hear what a sound system will sound like in a building before it has even been built!

Dr Bose develops unconventional products but also has unconventional views on the technology related to psychoacoustics. He believes that developer’s limited knowledge of the subject limits the ability to be discerning of it. He states that distortion is over-rated in perceived quality. He therefore does not publish the specifications for his products. He believes it is the listeners’ perception, whatever that may be that discerns their preferences.

Today, Bose is synonymous with quality sound. From large sporting events to the Sistine Chapel, from space shuttles to major theatres. No matter how small or large the venue, Bose has a solution and the company is now considered the most respected name in sound.
